Windows DVD Player is a very simple media app that plays both commercial and homemade videodiscs without requiring users to install a large number of external drivers. It works with the video playback libraries that come with Windows to render DVDs the same way that a physical boxed solution would.

That means that if you can play a DVD on an actual player machine in your region you shouldn't have any difficulty doing the same on your machine. Naturally, you're still be bound to the same restrictions that anyone might when working with their computer's hardware, but those with region-free external players should find that the app will allow them to watch international content easily.

Since it uses the same play and pause controls found in almost any modern media player app, Windows DVD Player shouldn't confound new users. It should also respond to keyboard media controls, which is good news for those who use an external keyboard and want to lean back while they're watching a favorite movie.

Best of all, Windows DVD Player is rather lightweight. That means it won't slow your playback rate down even if you're running it on relatively anemic hardware. While you're still want hardware acceleration if at all possible, the app will support some pretty esoteric configurations.
